A Win-Win for Ohioans
The sales tax holiday was created to do two things: save money for Ohio consumers and provide an economic boost for Ohio's retail sector. It will achieve both of those goals by saving the average family nearly $40.00 on items they would already be purchasing, while at the same time creating millions of dollars of economic activity.
Consumers will not have to pay any state or county sales and use tax on any school supplies or instructional materials under $20.00, and on any clothing or apparel items under $75.00. From pens, pencils and notebooks to shoes, jeans and book bags, consumers will save money on many of the goods they need for the upcoming school year. Shoppers will simply purchase their goods as they normally would, online or in stores, and retailers will not include any sales tax on goods that fall under the exemption.
Retailers, which support 1 of every 4 Ohio jobs, will experience Black Friday-like levels of shopper participation. Ohio's sales tax holiday is modeled after a similar version in Florida, which created $115 million in economic activity in 2011. This will be a huge boon to the industry, and will help them create even more jobs for Ohioans.
